I'm left with some pretty useful stuff, and well no mess since we cleaned it up last night (along with half a bottle of champagne which the relatives left behind). Cleaning goes so much faster with a little Elvis in the background and some fun! It's been a pretty awesome Christmas, got to spend some quality time with the family with jokes in tact. So here I am boxing day, trying to master the art of vegetation. I have no artistic muse these days, but it's okay because it lets me practice the old songs i've written for just such an occasion. So, time to reflect on a year gone by... what have I learned?
- Friends are incredibly valuable and while it seems great to be friends with everyone, it's better to spend more time with a select few people and actually grow much stronger bonds as opposed to spreading yourself so thinly. These days I'm working on being less of a 'friend whore' and trying to take care of the people I already care about.
- School is messed up. If you want a post secondary education, buy a couple of used textbooks, read them, get some exams from last year, re write them and figure out if you know the material. I swear, this is the equivalant of a university education. Most of the stuff you forget, most of the time all you need is a good textbook and yes, classes can be quite useless. This is the frustrating point for me, because I honestly didn't think it would be like that. I feel like I'm not fully using my potential, but suppose that's the way it goes.
- Love is not cut and paste. It's so difficult to catch, like one of those eye floaty things you get when you look at the sun too long. I mean, I have good friends who say things like they will never have kids with someone until they KNOW that it will work out perfectly and they will never fight or break up. But this is something that is IMPOSSIBLE to know. Totally impossible. You can never know these things, it's inevetable that you'll get into an argument. Plus my whole concept of 'Disney Love' is out the window. That hurts, I feel like that whole idea has been a lie since I was young; much like the let down when you discover Santa Clause is not real. And, it's times like these when I wonder if you just seek out someone who you think you'll be able to tolerate for the rest of your life, someone you think will be loyal and not walk out on you. It's just... so wrong to me I suppose. Then I get thinking about how damn old I'm getting and that there isn't much time left for being single in that biological clock. Then I kick myself and say.. hey... YOU... marriage is unnescessary if you can support yourself so pay attention in your classes, get a good job and suck it up! Then I feel better and get on to the next point on the ever growing list...
- Life will sucker punch you when you're down. *Not from personal experience but from events I've seen in friends life's this past year. It's a little scary how badly you can be beaten down over and over again by life and its consequences. I don't know what I would do in this kind of situation. Maybe it hasn't happened to me because there's no way that it could be handled by my life skills.
- Soft drinks...are the DEVIL!!! The government is against smoking, it's banning it from every bar, restaurant, mode of public transportation and sidewalk but what about soft drinks? I mean the prescription drug market is huge... one drug for another right but what about Soft Drinks. Phosphoric Acid in the beverage, so much sugar, carbon dioxide, caffine and a million other chemicals it's not good for anyone... in fact you could say that people who drink them are actually doing HARM to themselves. And yet, it's our personal choice to do this. And in fact they are allowed to have soft drink commercials as much as they want while alcohol, cigarettes and prescription drugs have many limits on their advertising. In a way soft drinks are worse because kids can drink them whenever they want, there's no 'age limit', no warning labels, NOTHING. And EVERYONE knows they are addicting especially the darker pops because they contain caffine, so sure we stop people from getting hooked on cigarettes but please, oh please try one of these heavily sugared, processed drinks. I'm sure it will make everything better. It's all about the money, you could say. Believe me, there will be future rants on this topic.
